Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
